Be a “Lead to Read” Volunteer

Last school year, 15 parishioners helped 2nd graders at Troost Elementary learn to read, one lunch hour at a time. If you’re interested in reading with a student in their classroom, one-on-one, for a half hour each week during the school year, come find out more about Lead to Read KC, the program we partnered with last year, and will be part of again this year. Meet the readers who participated in the program at a social hosted by Christie Makar, St. Peter’s Lead to Read liaison, on Wednesday, August 23, at 7 p.m. RSVP by e-mailing Charlie Murphy, Urban Village Youth Sub-Committee Chair, at ccmurphy@gmail.com or call him at 816-678-6366.
Last year’s readers were: Kathleen Barry, Nancy Caccamo, Kathleen Chaney, Maria Gillcrist, Paula Holmquist, Len Jennings, Julie Kramer, Gary Kruger, Kathy Lee, Beth Madden, Kathleen Madden Riley, Barbara Maher, John Maher, Christie Makar, Katie Miller, Charlie Murphy, Leslie Shevlin, Julie Spaeth, and Paul Toigo.

Join the Landscape Maintenance Committee

The Landscape Maintenance Committee is devoted to keeping our campus beautiful and welcoming through all seasons. Can you help? We need volunteers to water and keep us blooming all summer! Contact Mary Hellings if you can spare a few hours. There is something to fit any schedule. Bring the kids, or just enjoy the peace and beauty on your own.

Leaders Needed For Children’s Liturgy

We need adult and high-school aged volunteers to assist with our Children’s Liturgy of the Word ministry, which is offered throughout the school year during the Sunday 9 a.m. Mass. Children ages 4 – 2nd grade are invited after opening prayer to accompany the weekly teacher and helper to the church basement where they learn about the readings and gospel in ways they can understand. The children pray, share, listen, sing, and color in activity books, then return to the Mass prior to the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Volunteers are needed to teach the lessons and assist with supervising the children. This is a great opportunity for high school students in need of service hours to serve as the “helper”, or adults eager to help our youngsters learn the Word. Preparation for the lesson requires no more than a few moments perusing the teacher’s guide and weekly activity book. We are in dire need of more volunteers to continue this wonderful ministry. To get involved, please contact megan.scheiderer@huschblackwell.com. All adult volunteers must complete Protecting God’s Children.

Money Counters Needed

Adults are needed to count the collections on Sunday. It takes about one hour of your time. There should be a sizable pool of trained volunteers so that the task is not burdensome on any one person. Please contact Warren Blevins in the parish office at (816) 363-2320, Ext. #131 or wblevins@stpeterskc.org.

St. Peter’s Music Ministry

Ever considered joining our Sunday 9 a.m. or 11 a.m. Choir? We’re also looking for soloists who are interested in being Cantors for Saturday or Sunday Masses, as well as instrumental accompanists. Contact our Music Director, James Wagner, at (816) 363-2320, #114 or jwagner@stpeterskc.org. Classes resume in September, following our summer hiatus. Please join us!
