For over 30 years, St. Peter's has enjoyed a sister-parish relationship with San Francisco de Asis Parish (SFA) in El Salvador. In 1988, then-pastor Fr. Gerald Waris joined a U.S. delegation to El Salvador to witness firsthand the human rights violations reported there. Upon Fr. Waris' return, that sister parish relationship was formed, with overwhelming support from St. Peter's parishioners.
Since that time, more than 80 parishioners have visited San Francisco de Asis, and SFA delegations have visited our parish. St. Peter’s has provided financial assistance for several needs at SFA: natural disaster relief, equipment for a Technical Center, and job training.
Since 2010, the SPOT team has focused on helping the youth of SFA break the cycle of poverty and gang violence by supporting education. The Beca Scholarship program was started (Beca being Spanish for scholarship) and has assisted over 90 high school and university students in achieving their education goals.
