Youth Faith Formation

St. Peter’s Parish offers multiple opportunities for teens (and adult volunteers) to engage in spiritual development and service in our community, through Youth activities. Here are just some of the ways you can get involved:

Altar Servers
Incoming 6th grade and older students are invited to assist at the altar during weekend Masses, school Masses, and special liturgical celebrations. Training is offered at the beginning of summer and also usually again just before school starts in the fall.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word
At the 9 a.m. Sunday Mass, children ages 4-2nd grade are invited after the opening prayer to go to the church basement with adult volunteers to discuss the readings and Gospel in a separate Liturgy of the Word discussion appropriate to their level of understanding. This ministry is offered during the school year, and adult volunteers are always welcome. Please contact Megan Scheiderer to get on the volunteer schedule.
Megan Scheiderer,

In the fall, incoming freshman in high school and older students are invited to prepare for confirmation and a re-commitment to their Catholic faith. Students will participate in group meetings, attend Mass together, attend a retreat, and find a sponsor who can attend some meetings and confirmation. Confirmation is scheduled for a weekday evening after Easter, usually in April. The Bishop celebrates Mass and confirms the confirmantes.
Toni Mitchum (816) 363-2320, #171,

During Sunday morning Masses, Adult and Youth volunteers care for young children (Kindergarten and younger) in the church basement nursery. A donation of $2.00 per child is encouraged. Contact Jaime Littrell to get on the schedule.
Corinne Wolff,

Parish School of Religion
We provide religious education for the families of our parishioners whose children attend public or non-Catholic private schools or who are home schooled and are in grades K-8. We collaborate with Visitation Parish to offer this important education, which includes sacramental preparation for First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion.

Youth Group and Mission Trips
Middle School and High School students have the opportunity to work together during the school year and summer to provide service to the parish, our neighbors, and people in need in cities outside of Kansas City. Contact Toni Mitchum to find out what’s coming up or to inquire about the summer Mission trips.

Please note: Adults (ages 18+) who would like to volunteer with our Youth are required to complete a background check and complete a three-hour classed called “Protecting God’s Children for Adults.” This is a program to ensure safe environments in all parishes, schools, and diocesan programs. Learn more about the program here, or sign up for the training required for all adult volunteers through this Virtus link. Please note, you must register in advance for this class. Walk-in’s will not be accepted.
