This year, the candles at our Advent Penance Service will be lit by a very special flame, the Peace Light from Bethlehem. For the past 32 years, a Girl Guide or Boy Scout from Austria has collected a flame from the Grotto of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where Our Lord was born. With the help of Austrian Broadcasting, Austrian Airlines, and the International Catholic Conference on Scouting, that flame is sent all around the world as a symbol of the peace Christ offers us. This year, Pladfinder (Boy Scout) Niklas Lehner of Vorchdorf, Austria, collected the flame from the Grotto on November 28. It arrived in New York on December 1 and has been spreading westward ever since.

You will have an opportunity to bring this Peace Light from Bethlehem home with you. Candles in glass will be available for a free-will offering ($3.00 is suggested), immediately before and immediately after the service. We hope to see you on Sunday!
