Enrichment Courses

Check out these enrichment opportunities available to St. Peter’s students right here at St. Peter’s School! Most of the activities or courses take place after school Monday – Thursday,  and one in the morning before school. All instructors are Virtus-trained.

To enroll:

1) Download this pdf of the Enrollment Form OR e-mail Mrs. Angie Meyer at ameyer@stpeterskc.org.
2) Send a check made out to St. Peter’s School, indicating in the Memo line of the check which course(s) you are paying for OR pay online. Click here and choose “Enrichment” to make payment.
3) All students are to be picked up in the lobby at the conclusion of enrichment classes with the exception of those who are to be sent to After School Care (ACS).
4) On Enrollment form, let Mrs. Meyer know if your child will be picked up, by whom, and/or if your child is to be delivered to After School Care (ACS).
5) Some instructors offer a snack after school as part of the fee; if your child has any food allergies, please let the instructor or Mrs. Meyer know.

Enrichment Courses for Second Semester 2017

Be a Master Chef!—Ms. Carmela Guthrie, Instructor

Do you like to cook and eat? If so, this is the class for you. This child-friendly, six-week course will be math and language centered. Children will learn to cook various items while learning things such as kitchen safety, measurements, fractions, and time. After creating a masterpiece, your child will journal about his/her experience while he/she eats. Each child will receive an apron or chef’s hat plus a journal. Some items we will cook will be tacos, hamburger casserole, blueberry pancakes, and tostadas. This class is great for students in grades 1-3.

Chess Club—Mr. Bob Jacobsen, Instructor

K-8th graders may participate in this program designed to develop students’ skills at this game of strategy.  Different types of chess games will also be taught.  Tournaments will be made available to those students who are interested, as well.

Crafting—Mrs. Cristin Culver, Instructor

Does your child love stretching his/her imagination?  If so, Mrs. Culver’s Crafting Class is for him/her!  This class is available to students in grades K-3.  After-school snack will be provided.  Come join the fun!  Maximum, 20 students.  Please enroll by February 3.

Drama—Mrs. Pam Sollars, Instructor

Need a little less drama in life and more drama on stage where it belongs?  Students can join school parent and actor Mrs. Pam Sollars, STA student Marin Brown, along with an assortment of guest professional KC-based Equity artists Cathy Barnett and Val Fagan, in a fun-filled semester of acting and creative dramatics.  Through theatre games and exercises, students will develop the tools and confidence needed to perform in front of live audiences.  A performance of a play will be presented at the end of the session.  Drama is open to students in grades 1-6.

Early Engineers—After-School LEGO Club (Bricks 4 Kidz)—Instructor TBD (Virtus-Certified)

Bricks 4 Kidz enrichment classes are designed to be educational and FUN!  B4K teaches children principles of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) utilizing motorized LEGO models.  Every lesson is unique and designed to engage a child’s mind.  Class size is limited; students will receive a mini-fig with enrollment.  This six-week session is open to students in grades K-5.

Games! Games! Games!—Mrs. Kate Morgan, Instructor

Do you enjoy playing games?  In this class children will learn new games to play inside on a rainy day, outside with neighborhood friends, and at the park with siblings.  Come prepared to learn new games to teach your families, friends, and neighbors this summer.  We will play Charades, Heads Up, Hop Scotch, Capture the Flag, Sardines, Red Rover, Musical Chairs, relay races, and we will even have a scavenger hunt.  Come ready to share a game, and don’t forget your water bottle.  Let’s have some fun! This class is for students in grades K-6.

Kindergarten Kids Go Crazy!—Ms. Carmela Guthrie, Instructor

This hour-long class will be broken up into 30 minutes of math and 30 minutes of working with words. The class will focus on fun techniques to help your child learn how to count, add, and solve problems in math using many different types of manipulatives, such as, marshmallows, cereal, pennies, mm’s, etc. Puppets, songs, and games will be used to help sound out words and improve reading.

Math Club—Ms. Caity Hynson & Ms. Dorothy Starnes, Instructors

This club is for students in grades 5-8 who want to be challenged in math, as well as compete in local math competitions.  Students will fine-tune talents and prepare to make their way to the top in competitions!

  • February 2, 9, 16, & 23; March 2, 23, & 30; April 6
  • $115, which helps offset contest fees

 

Morning Gym—Mr. Bob Jacobsen & Mr. Walt Tabory, Coaches

Wake up, rise, and shine! Let these coaches reward your child with morning gym time! This is ideal for students to get more exercise, be more alert in class, improve attention to detail, participate in off-season and non-league sports, and to build stamina. If your child is excited to participate in a variety of age-appropriate games and exercises (such as floor hockey, lacrosse, shoeless soccer, sponge ball, monster ball, scooter ball, balance and agility work), and to be wide awake when arriving in the classroom, enroll now!

Morning Gym is open to students in grades 3-8. It is recommended that students wear a separate t-shirt (not school polo) and gym shoes are a must!

Painting Class—Mrs. Julie Starosta, Instructor

Do you love to paint or love the Royals?  Mrs. Starosta is offering Painting Class; students will be painting a three-piece canvas artwork with a Royals theme. This course is for students in grades 4-8.

  • Wednesdays, 3:20-4:15 pm; Library
  • March 22-April 19 (possible class on April 26, if students need more time)
  • $75, which includes all materials

 

Rosary Making—Mrs. Julie Starosta, Instructor

This course is for students who are interested in making a rosary with hand-made beads.  Students will not only make their own beads, but they will also assemble a beautiful rosary, which would make a great gift (Mother’s Day, First Communion, or Graduation) or be a one-of-a-kind rosary with which to pray.  Rosary Making is available to students in grades 2-8.

  • $75, which includes materials for one rosary (students must supply materials for additional rosary, if desired {53 beads}

 

Youth Choir—Mrs. Jessie Reimer, Director

Does your child love to sing? If the answer is yes, St. Peter’s new Youth Choir for grades 3-6 is for him/her! Students will build healthy singing habits through age-appropriate vocal training, strengthen performance skills by singing a variety of songs at different venues, and enhance musical knowledge with beginning music theory. Minimum, 10 students.
