This message is to ask for your help with two things the St. Peter’s community does exceptionally well: 1) Helping a fellow parishioner — Michelle Melland and her family; and 2) Throwing a party — a benefit concert on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, from 7-9 pm at The Well, 7421 Broadway (one block east of Wornall) featuring St. Peter’s alum Anna Gillcrist and her Rock Solid Trio.
As you may know, St. Peter’s parishioner Michelle Melland was diagnosed last summer with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. A dedicated and talented group of volunteers from the parish have been working for the past few months to convert the Melland’s garage into a bedroom and to make the ground level of their home wheelchair accessible. Tremendous progress is being made on the project. BUT, Michelle’s ALS muscle degeneration is progressing relentlessly and the family must get their home renovated and wheelchair accessible quickly. She has been forced to cut back her work load to part time and money is getting tighter as they try to complete the necessary updates. Bottom line… the Melland’s and their team of construction volunteers need more financial support — and need it now — to get this project completed as soon as possible.
With all of the architectural design, engineering and skilled labor being donated, and with generous donations from parishioners and their businesses, this more than $100,000 project is being undertaken on a $30,000 budget. To date, nearly $13,500 has been donated (primarily from families whose children are classmates of the Melland’s nine year old twin daughters, Hayley and Sydney). This leaves a $16,500 deficit, which we’d like to put a serious dent in this month. (Check out the project and progress at michellemelland.com.)
This is where the party comes in. Sponsored by Lori and Chris Lewellen, the St. Peter’s Knights of Columbus Council is hosting a benefit concert on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, from 7-9 pm at The Well, 7421 Broadway (one block east of Wornall) featuring St. Peter’s alum Anna Gillcrist, (daughter of project architects Maria and Bob Gillcrist) and recent musical theater graduate from Stephens College. Anna will be accompanied by the “Rock Solid Trio” featuring our music director, James Wagner, as well as parishioners Fritz Hutchison and David Gillcrist. Complementary light hors d’œuvres and Annheiser-Busch products will be provided. Additional food and drink specials will also be available. Adults only, please.
More details will be forthcoming, but please bring a $10 per person suggested door charge and your checkbook to make your tax deductible contribution in any amount that you are able. Our goal is to raise $8,000. Your continued prayers and financial assistance are an incredible blessing for Michelle and her family. ALL PROCEEDS WILL BENEFIT THE MELLAND’S. Contributions are tax deductible — make check payable to the Knights of Columbus and put “Melland” in the memo line. Credit cards welcomed at the event. Checks may also be mailed to Pete Hutchison, 6758 Pennsylvania Ave., KCMO 64113.
Thanks very much for your prayers and financial support!!!
